How language changes, Issue 15: Sweater vs. Sweatshirt

I’ve recently had debates with teenagers who swear that a crew neck sweatshirt is a “sweater” and that a “sweatshirt” must have a hood. Huh?

I. can’t. call. this. a. sweater.

I would call this a sweatshirt or a hoodie, so we’re in agreement on this.

For me, it’s all about the material. This is a sweater.
